ANASTACIA has been away for four years and now she is back she’s realised that her sound has been copied by rivals such as Katy Perry, Pink and Kelly Clarkson.
Not that the 43-year-old from Chicago, Illinois, minds.
She has been incredibly popular in the 12 years since her breakthrough, is seen as one of the world’s best singers and clearly still has what it takes after she was invited to be a stand-in judge on The X Factor.
She said: “My sound is Sprock music – so soul, pop, rock.
“Pink does my kind of music, so does Kelly Clarkson, there’s a lot of people – even Katy Perry a little bit.
“I feel that I’ve found my niche in what I like to do musically.
“I did move away from it when I switched labels, and did it because I thought I didn’t want to go into a label with too much of an ego.
“As an artist I was letting them give me direction and the reality is they just said, ‘Here’s the deal, here’s what we’re going to do’, and I was like, ‘OK’ and sang these songs. I didn’t really feel that they were a ‘me’ fit.”
After her debut album, Not That Kind, hit No2 in 2000 and her self-titled album in 2003 went to No1, she discovered when going for breast reduction surgery that she had breast cancer.
She battled and beat the disease and, together with her songs like Left Outside Alone, I’m Outta Love and Sick and Tired, proved she’s a fighter.
Anastacia is in huge demand – whether it be tours with Lulu or being phoned by the world’s best DJ, David Guetta.
“He’s called me so many times and I just don’t have time for it. I would probably enjoy doing a duet because I have done stuff like that. Not that I would change my style.
“I wouldn’t mind taking on an interesting project, which I did with Tony Moran (on dance tune If I Were Your Boyfriend).
“I’ve also made a remix with Tiesto of a song that was a car commercial (Skoda’s What Can We Do (A Deeper Love)).”
Currently on tour in Europe, with plans to perform in the UK next year, Anastacia didn’t sign a record deal until she was 30 and was told by her record company to say she was only 24.
She said: “I think I’ve always felt I was climbing up the ladder and most of my career was spent clambering up it.
“I’m a preacher of the survivor type of mentality. If people were too mean I’d break down crying, so I like positive reinforcement and I just try to deflect it – that glass is still half full.”
Fame doesn’t fit well with her either, so much so that she denies she is Anastacia when fans recognise her.
She laughed: “People say ‘You look a lot like Anastacia’ and I say, ‘I am’ and they’re like, ‘Get out, shut up’ and if I say I’m not her they’re like, ‘Sure you are’, so I can’t win.”
In June, she was called by Simon Cowell to be a guest judge on The X Factor in Glasgow, alongside Louis Walsh, Gary Barlow and Tulisa Contostavlos.
Although she was discovered singing Oleta Adams’s Get Here in an American reality show and spent most of the 90s, before her record contract in 2000, singing back-up, she found being a judge tough going.
“Surprisingly enough, it’s so hard. I was in the position, that’s how I got my career, from a show like that. But I didn’t like the whole competition factor because it just felt like it was taking the art away from trying to be an artist.”
Although bosses wanted her to take on the judge role full time she knocked them back and they later gave it to Nicole Scherzinger.
Anastacia said: “I had a great time and I would gladly help them out again, but my schedule was crazy busy. I knew it was definitely something I couldn’t do full time, but it was something they really wanted.”
